Dear Peachtree Friends, I hope you’re staying cool and enjoying a safe and joyful summer. As we approach the Fourth of July, I invite you to celebrate with heartfelt gratitude for the freedoms and opportunities we enjoy in this country. Be patriotic—there is much to be thankful for in the ideals and aspirations that have shaped our nation. But let us also remember where our deepest citizenship lies. As the Apostle Paul reminds us in Philippians 3:20, “Our citizenship is in heaven.” That means while we live and participate fully in this world, our truest allegiance is to Jesus Christ. Each week in worship, when we pray “Thy Kingdom come,” we’re expressing loyalty to a higher calling—a kingdom not of this world. This distinction matters. In our time, the rise of Christian Nationalism has become a concern—a distortion of faith that merges religious identity with political power. It goes far beyond healthy patriotism. It can become a form of idolatry, placing trust in human institutions over God's kingdom. I’ve been asked to help lead a clergy conversation for the Georgia Region of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) around the book Baptizing America: How Mainline Protestants Helped Build Christian Nationalism. I also had the chance to speak with co-author Beau Underwood on our podcast, Complex Creatures. You can listen to that conversation here: 🎧 Christian Nationalism: A Conversation with Beau Underwood This work has reminded me that when we claim Jesus as Lord, we also choose to receive our values, our ethics, and our hope from him—not from any earthly culture, party, or power. Jesus is not just our Savior—he is our King. So, as you enjoy fireworks and cookouts, take pride in our nation’s beauty and freedoms. But celebrate even more the grace of God, the forgiveness of sins, and the call to live as citizens of heaven. You belong to God. You are part of a holy people. Let’s keep that perspective clear and central. With gratitude and hope, Jarrod

Tuesdays | July 8 - Aug 19 | 7-8:30 pm | Online Only Did the Hebrew prophets only foretell Jesus’ coming, or did they forthtell God’s righteous will for people living in their own time, a word that Jesus would later Himself proclaim and embody? If the prophets of the Hebrew Bible offered both correction and consolation to God’s people throughout their history, then what do those prophets have to say to us today as we seek to follow Christ? In this seven-week study we will address those questions using Walter Brueggemann’s 2019 wonderful study guide entitled, From Judgement to Hope: A Study on the Prophets. It offers good summaries and commentaries on each prophet, their historical context, timelines, and exemplary passages from each prophet that we will study. The guide is widely available online for $12 or less. Please, order your own copy. If the cost is prohibitive, contact Rev. Brooks Gignilliat; the church does offer scholarships. A guided discussion format will allow free conversation while keeping us on-track and focused on key take-aways. Join us as we read texts that shaped Jesus’ understanding of Who God is and what God expects of His people. The class will meet on-line only on Tuesday evenings from July 8 through August 19 at 7:30 PM. There is no registration fee. However, to receive the Zoom link, you must register by emailing the teacher: ellardw@bellsouth.net Even if you can’t attend live, but you want to watch sessions after the fact, be sure to email the teacher, so that you can receive links to watch the recordings.

Sundays | 10am | Room 218 Our Youth Sunday School class for middle and high school students (6th-12th grade) is designed to help teens connect with Scripture in a real and meaningful way.
In this 45-minute session, we'll explore how God’s Word speaks directly to the challenges and decisions teens face every day—whether it's friendships, identity, faith, or purpose.
Through engaging teaching and thoughtful discussion, students will not only dive deeper into understanding the character of God, but also strengthen their theology and build a foundation for navigating life with faith and wisdom.
This class is a place to learn, ask questions, and grow together in a supportive, vibrant community.

Wednesdays Jan 8-June 25 | 7pm | Library and Online The woman at the well, the teacher who came to Jesus by night, the disciple who doubted: John’s gospel offers us so many eyes through whom to encounter Jesus. Simultaneously the most simple of all the gospels and the most profound, John’s gospel provides the reader with its own insightful perspective on Jesus’ life, ministry, and meaning. We offer this class as an extended study to allow participants an opportunity to enter deeply into this amazing text. We have built a few breaks into the schedule to allow some breathers for all. Whether you are new to Bible study, revisiting this gospel for a refresher, or seeking a deeper encounter with a familiar text, you will find nurture for your spiritual growth in this study. Contact Rev. Brooks Gignilliat (bgignilliat@peachtree.org) or Mary-Elizabeth Ellard (ellardw@bellsouth.net) for more information. Register: Peachtree.org/john

Sundays | July 13-Aug 24 | 10am | RM 213 When have ever you felt cut off from home, from the familiar, from security and belonging? What buoyed you up? What dragged you down or threatened to turn you away from your authentic self? When the Israelites found themselves exiled to Babylon, God sent Daniel to speak words of comfort and of challenge to His people. Come and hear how these words can speak to us in our own experiences of Exile, on how we can come home to God and – more radically -- how God comes to us even when we are far away from Him.
