This coming week we will celebrate President's Day. Over the past year, I have been enamored by Jeffrey Rosen's book, The Pursuit of Happiness: How Classical Writers on Virtue Inspired the Lives of the Founders and Defined America. A central point of the book is that our founders uniformly believed that "self-rule" required self-mastery—thus a democratic-republic such as ours needs its population and its leaders to grow in virtue. To this end, Rosen points out that one of Washington's greatest cultivated virtues was resolution. In the face of mutiny, because congress had failed to pay soldiers, give them proper supplies, and their environs were diminishing (to put it mildly), Washington could have become a Military-Tyrant leader. He could have used the lack of morale to take greater power for himself. Washington could have given in to his own fits of justified anger and disappointment. But he did no such thing. Trained by his practices of self-control and resolve, Rosen reports, "he called on the army to 'express your utmost horror & detestation' of anyone who was plotting 'to overturn the liberties of our Country, & who wickedly attempts to open the flood Gates of Civil discord & deluge our rising Empire in Blood.' By seeking 'to take advantage of the passions,' he said, the 'secret Mover of the Scheme' wanted to prevent the soldiers from 'giving time for col deliberative thinking' and 'composure of Mind." In the end Washington held his troops to the highest of standards and called for patience amidst hunger, understanding in light of anger, and calm amidst passion. The scriptures never tell us that anger is wrong. Anger's dark side is when we become its slave and then do unvirtuous or wicked things because we are moved by it (Ephesians 4:26). Friends, as I look out into the world, I see loads of reasons to be angry, and I sense that most folks are carrying some burden of anger just below the surface every day. Let's remember the wisdom of virtue seekers like Washington and let us remember to find resolve in the face of challenging and uncertain days. Truth is, there are no certain days, so it is best if we calm our hearts and walk in self-control. Jar

Wednesdays Jan 8-June 25 | 7pm | Library and Online The woman at the well, the teacher who came to Jesus by night, the disciple who doubted: John’s gospel offers us so many eyes through whom to encounter Jesus. Simultaneously the most simple of all the gospels and the most profound, John’s gospel provides the reader with its own insightful perspective on Jesus’ life, ministry, and meaning. We offer this class as an extended study to allow participants an opportunity to enter deeply into this amazing text. We have built a few breaks into the schedule to allow some breathers for all. Whether you are new to Bible study, revisiting this gospel for a refresher, or seeking a deeper encounter with a familiar text, you will find nurture for your spiritual growth in this study. Contact Rev. Brooks Gignilliat (bgignilliat@peachtree.org) or Mary-Elizabeth Ellard (ellardw@bellsouth.net) for more information. Register: Peachtree.org/john

Sundays | Jan 5 - April 20 | 10am | RM 213 The origins of Christ’s church in Rome are lost to us, but by the time Paul was writing his letter to them (about AD 54), it was a mature and robust church – perhaps none too sure about this wandering missionary (and former persecutor of the church) of whom they had heard so much controversy. So, before Paul visits them, he writes a letter of introduction. Unique among his letters, Paul addresses Romans to a church he did not found and does not know. In his self-introduction, Paul fully lays out his understanding of the gospel, including how it relates to his mission and to the congregation in Rome. In the process, he bequeathed to us the greatest theological treatise in Scripture and some of its most memorable and uplifting passages. Join us as we explore Paul’s Letter to the Romans: The Power of God unto Salvation.
